When planning her career, one of Dr. LaVonne Browne’s primary objectives has always been to work with college students. Thus, throughout her training as well as after receiving her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia, she has consistently sought out opportunities to work with students and has had the opportunity to do so in several capacities. Some of these include working at university counseling centers and women’s centers, serving as an academic advisor, and assisting first-generation college students in the areas of personal, social, and academic development. Dr. Browne has also presented several workshops on issues important to students within college communities such as relationships, academic success, and adjustment issues.
As a Licensed Psychologist at the George Mason University Counseling Center, Dr. Browne looks forward to continuing her work with students as they cope with the challenges of life. Her approach to therapy focuses heavily on the relationship between the therapist and the client. It is her belief that by providing clients with a safe, supportive environment to explore their concerns, effective change can happen. It is also her goal to assist clients in understanding how they perceive themselves and their world, and how changes here can lead to an increase in their overall psychological and emotional health. As Assistant Director for Multicultural Services, Dr. Browne is also significantly involved in diversity initiatives and programs for the counseling center. In this capacity, she also serves as coordinator for the Peer Empowerment Program.
Dr. Browne has worked with a wide range of clinical concerns including depression, stress/anxiety, eating disorders, sexual abuse, and relationship issues. In addition, her areas of special interest include multicultural/diversity issues, women’s issues, and spiritual/religious development. Ultimately, her goal is to help students reach their personal goals and live fulfilling, meaningful lives.
